Candidate for darkness (open) « Thread Started on Mar 5, 2009, 10:49pm »
So, they'd dumped her in with the dragon candidates. Teonie's lips curled, she was going nowhere near a dragon hatching.
She didn't want a dragon. She didn't much enjoy flying and she was one of those weird people who found whers more attractive, in their wild fierceness.
Still, she could put up living with those other candidates, and the chores would be nothing she wasn't used to. The young woman walked into the common room, glancing around. All she saw was somebody's firelizard, which blinked at her then went between.
She should get herself one of those, or would it be fair? If she was going to be nocturnal, with a wher...

Lyeldran was not happy about this candidacy situation. All he wanted was to Impress a wher, but this was turning into quite a process. First of all, he had to live in these barracks, with other candidates. He wasn't opposed to staying inside when he could get a warm bed, but the cots candidates were forced to sleep in felt more uncomfortable to him than the ground he usually slept on, and plus he felt claustrophobic in such cramped quarters. It would be unthinkable to keep Frightful cooped up in the barracks, so he had to let her fly on her own. He didn't think she would run away, but he still would have be preferred to keep her nearby. And the chores...ugh! Lyeldran was disgusted at having to do work for other people. Why couldn't the sharding dragonriders do it themselves?
He was moody and scowling as he stalked into the common room, fresh from a chore session washing dishes in the kitchen, during which he had broken two plates in his frustration. Lye threw himself into a chair, grumbling to himself. Glancing up at the other candidate, he sighed. "Why did I decide to get myself into this?"

Teonie glanced over. Ugh. A strange male. Part of her seriously contemplated up and leaving.
She forced herself to give the other candidate a chance, but he was probably some dragon-seeking weenie. "Oh, I don't know. What, exactly, are you getting yourself into this for? Got dragon eggs in your eyes?"
Surely, most of the candidates did, they wanted to fly. Pheh. With Thread gone, the dragons were nothing but flying workbeasts. Pretty ones, sure, but beasts nonetheless. Whers, at least, had personalities other than being some miserable echo of their riders.

Lye frowned at the girl's condescending tone. What was her problem? Then again, maybe she was just as grumpy as he was at the arrangements. "Dragons? Shards, no. Maybe if I could go off on my own, I'd get a dragon, but I couldn't stand being part of a Wing. No, I'm here for a wher," he told her. "You too?" He guessed.

Teonie actually relaxed a bit at the man's reaction. "Good to know there's at least one other person here with some sense." From her tone, she didn't assume he had much.
He was, after all, a man. "They might at least give us separate quarters. Hard to adjust to a wherhandler's schedule when you're stuck with dragon people."
She made the word 'dragon' into an insult, her lips curling.

"I guess I'm the same for whers as they are for dragons, though," Lye admitted. "Else why would I be putting up with being treated like a drudge?" He lobbed a light punch at the sofa pillow, letting out his frustration.
Rolling his eyes, he stodo and paced over to the window. Lye was never able to stay still for long. "Another good thing about these dragon people is their flitts." He had seen one earlier, and it reminded him of a more intelligent, more cuddly hunting falcon.

Teonie nodded. 'I've considered trying to get my hands on an egg, but they're diurnal and whers are nocturnal, I'm not sure it would be fair on the little guy."
She'd think about it, but...well. She wouldn't turn an egg down, but definitely wasn't sure she was going to go out of her way to find one.

"A wher is a wher, but I think I'd like a male, maybe a brown or bronze. I don't know if I could deal with a Run while I was out in the middle of nowhere," Lye said. He wasn't sure if he could deal with a Run at all, really, but he didn't want to admit that.
"How about you? Do you think there will be a gold egg in the clutch?" he asked.

"If there is, I don't want it. I'd prefer a male," Teonie admitted.
As much as she disliked *human* males, she didn't want to be stuck dealing with wher eggs. And bronze whers could bond to girls...that was one dream.
The other was that maybe there would be some strange colors in the clutch, something unusual and pretty. Something to stand out.
A silver wher, now *that* would be something to see!

Lyeldran nodded thoughtfully. He would have expected a woman to want a female wher, just as he preferred a male, but maybe Teonie had the same concerns he did about Runs and clutches. His mind jumped to the possibility of a new color just as hers did. He had seen the Black dragon, and he was very much impressed by her. Maybe if an Ebony hatched, he wouldn't mind a female so much. Grinning at the thought, he said, "I wonder if there will be new colors like in the dragons? Or maybe the whers will have something completely different to surprise us with."

Teonie grinned. "I saw a *pink* firelizard flitting around. Could you imagine a pink wher?"
"Especially if it was being handled by a straight guy." Something to wish on somebody who caused her trouble. This guy seemed to be fine, but he undoubtedly was straight. Most likely, anyway. A very gay guy would probably want a female.
Maybe.
Some probably wouldn't even care. A wher was a wher. Would she be upset if she bonded a green? Not really.
