Teonie almost never came to the Weyr proper. Her duties were, for the most part, around the Hold.
Yet, somebody was killing ranking riders. And dragons were diurnal. Of course, it was only natural that some of the wherhandlers come over to lend a hand. To watch for the murderer under the cover of darkness.
Teonie saw in the dark as well as any human. Teosk, next to her, saw far better. He was a little bored, his spotted tail twitching like that of the feline he so resembled.
If he was the right word. Teosk was a fully mature wher in all ways save one...he had yet to chase a female. Not only that, but he seemed to have a mental block on understanding *why*. Either he was a seriously late developer or russets were like whites.
Not her problem. She moved to start a walk around the perimeter of the bowl. The Weyrleader thought it was most likely that the murderer was a drudge or the like, but she suspected a recently assigned crafter. If she was going to get a spy into the Weyr, that was how she would do it.
"It's about time," she told Teosk, out loud, "We started playing them at their own game."
Had Teosk been an ordinary brown, say, she would have offered to be a spy herself. A brown wherhandler would hardly be noticed. But Teosk was no ordinary wher, he was one of the mutations the Council so feared...
But there had to be somebody...

In the darkness stood another figure, this one almost doing the same thing, yet this figure was no weyrhandler, but that did not mean he would not be on the lookout. In face the shappire rider, figured that the best time to cacth the killer would be in the middle of the night. And'l was trying to curb his habit of staying up late, and recently with the slow loss of the bags under his eyes, it was obvious that he was succeding, but tonight restlessness had gotten the better of him.... as well as Hexeth, but the shappires restlessness was only the result of And'l's.
He had already noticed the wherhandler through the dark, just barely anyway. He supected that wherever the wher was probably close by, and had probably already noticed him. Yet he diecided that he wanted to make himself known to the other person, but shappire rider, had the awful habit of doing it in a out of the blue manner which scared people who had not noticed him.
As And'l, began to move in that direction, Hexeth quickly sensed exactlly what her rider was trying to do, and said Mine that probably won't be a good idea you could bother the wher....... Yet it was too, late so Hexeth did the next best thing and caught up to her rider, sinice she had been hanging back further than usual. She stuck close to her rider as usal, maybe a little closer becuase she was worried about him getting hurt, by whoever was killing riders.
And'l heard Teonie as she was speaking to herself and found what she said intersting, his reply was simple...."Yes...that sounds like a good idea, but exactlly how should we beat them at thier own game?" He had idea's already, but just asked on what she was thinking. And'l's thoughts where more about flushing out the murder and not really spying on the conciual.

Teonie shook her head. "We need a way to find out what the council are doing and intending. We know they have been spying on us."
Teosk growled at the stranger, subsiding only when Teonie reached up and put a hand on the russet neck warningly. "I'd volunteer to spy if Teosk was an ordinary wher. Who pays attention to a wherhandler?"
Most of the more traditional dragonriders despised the whers and those who chose to be blood bonded to them. Whers, after all, were considered to be dumb beasts, a parody of the grace of dragons. Although here, in the darkness, it was Teosk who seemed to hold the grace, not the larger form of the sapphire.
"But Teosk is an abomination of an abomination to their kind." She ran a hand down the neck. In the darkness, he might be mistaken for a mere brown, but there was something about how he moved that was not quite like that.
The wildness radiated from him...this wher had 'handful' written all over him.

And'l thought about it for a moment.... he had been thinking about the need of a counter spy, but figuring out who to pick had been what he was puzzling over. It could not be any of the riders, simply because he felt like they needed to keep all the dragons here and not risk any. Plus the paranoia of the council would keep any dragon rider away also... they would know very easily which one was not of there fold.
"As would I." And'l felt that he would be good to go, because he was one of those people who where not noticed, and Hexeth looked like a blue on the outside. Yet he knew that all it would take to slip up is for Hexeth to say something, and her feminine voice would give away the fact that she wasn't a blue. Yet the idea still seemed to be a good one, despite the fact that it would take some planning, and they would need the right person. Figuring out what the Council's next move was going to be would help. Maybe they could even figure out who the assassin was.
....... and if a non dragon rider was chosen..... maybe do a little assassinating themselves. Yet now that he thought about it a bit more. That would probably bring down more on thier heads than they wanted to deal with, and would only prove the Council right. Spying was one thing.... killing people was a whole different matter. Except for the assassin of course, they would be an exception, " Have you tried to suggest this idea to the weyrleader? We would probably have to send someone without a dragon, and make sure no mutations of firelizards either." He certianly did not forget about them, " Yet do we have any wherhandlers with normal whers who could do it...... or would we have to send someone else?" Andol was going into his usually five steps ahead mode, but his voice was not one that was talking fast. It was as calm as usual.

Teonie considered. "We have a couple of green and blue handlers who might be spared." She kept one hand on Teosk.
Of course, if she was right about him, he was no threat to the council at all, but that would not matter. She was fairly sure that if she set foot on the northern continent, they would either both be killed or put on the next ship back. Depending on who exactly caught them.
She did not understand why they so feared the mutations. Was it because they placed more women on fighting dragons? That could be it. There were still some people, even, who thought women should not ride green. Or, for that matter, be wherhandlers at all...
