Shura Weyr
Eleven Turns ago, Shura Weyr did not exist. It was then known as Southern Weyr, and in a completely different location. One of the only two weyrs on the Southern Continent, Southern dragonriders were very easygoing.
They were not as worried about the return of Thread as they should have been, like the Weyrs to the North. The ground was grub protected, why should the riders waste time drilling when they could laze around in the sun?
That mentality changed when Thread returned and the dragons and riders were unprepared. Many, many riders and dragons lost their lives that first Threadfall. After that horrible day, the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader began proper drills and practices to combat Thread.
Threadfighting and Queens Rising took up a lot of time in Southern Weyr. The riders were still very relaxed, learning more tricks on how to fight Thread, and turning out young little Weyr-brats like fire-lizards. Southern Flourished for Turns after that first devastating Fall. That was, until the Plague.
Though most believe the Plague came from Akum, the dragons and riders of Southern that survived the horrid disease really didn't have time to care. Dragons and riders died by the dozens, surviving dragons never seemed to stop keening and crying out for their lost brothers and sisters.
Even Southern's Weyrfolk were decimated.
After the Plague seemed to die down, the remaining riders, dragons, and weyrfolk fled the bad memories of Southern Weyr. The now homeless people and dragons sought out an ancient crater to call home. What they found was perfect, The bottom of the crater was warm enough for Egg Hardening, the lake that had formed in the bowl of the crater was large and clear. It even have caves and tunnel systems, which meant that people had lived here before.
The settlers inhabited the crater and came up with a new name, Shura Weyr. As Shura began to flourish, Holds established near it, asking for protection. The dragons that had survived the Plague seemed different, but the people paid it no mind. It had been a rough time for everyone and they all had to work hard to continue their lives as a whole.
Glorinth Rose and laid a very small clutch, what took people by surprise was that the last Egg to hatch, though it needed help, was a White. Whites were not that common, but some had heard a few had been Hatched in other Weyrs. A few riders began to expect that the Plague may have affected the genes of the surviving dragons, but the suspicions died down because no other mutations were found.
After Glorinth Rose again a Turn later and Clutched a Queen Egg, people began to think things had returned to normal. Two Golds was good for the Weyr, meant more dragons and more riders to fight Thread when the second Gold matured.
As the second Gold, Rhaelth, matured though, Glorinth Rose again. After what seemed to be a normal period of gestation, the Gold laid her Eggs and suddenly winked Between, gone so very suddenly that everyone didn't know what to do. Her rider died of shock the same night, leaving Rhaelth the only Shura Queen.
Now, with Rhaelth ready to Rise as the Senior Queen, the Weyr awaits a new leader, a new clutch, and the Hatching of the Clutch already on the Sands. 20 Eggs wait there for Candidates of both genders, of chosen ages, and of all kinds of backgrounds to Touch and Impress them.
