It was a shadowed corner of the massive weyrbowl of course, because Binagoonganth loved shadows and didn’t much care for other humans. The one he did care for, the one he adored beyond all others, was sprawled between his forelegs, the pile of riding straps, topped with his rider’s gear, that sat beside the brownpair giving clear evidence of what they’d been doing previously, and the small, ecstatic, weyr canine lying upside down in the brownrider’s lap and gazing adoringly upward showed why the brownrider wasn’t moving her stuff out the way.
At first glance they weren’t much of an unusual pair, it was only after you took a second look and realised that brownrider Zamora was actually a somewhat burly, mostly flat chested, and plain faced female that she and Binagoongath became unusual, although for this Weyr with its many unusual colours of dragon, a female brownrider didn’t tend to cause that much comment.
Are you going to keep this one ZamoraMine? the brown dragon inquired, looking curiously down at the canine. ‘No, Bina,’ the brownrider replied firmly, although she did like canines, possibly not as much as her brother Z’mir did though, she wasn’t in the habit of adopting random vermin chasers from the weyrbowl, ‘He already has someone to look after him, and they’re bound to love him. I can’t just take someone’s canine off them.’ But I like him… the brown objected, making Zamora laugh. ‘Maybe when one of the canines around here has puppies we’ll look into getting one.’

"That is an unusually cute canine," came a voice from...above the pair. Fioreth circled once more before backwinging to a landing, M'kar grinning down at Zamora from the fire dragon's shoulders.
The firerider did know Zamora some. Not that many women Impressed brown. Browns tended to prefer riders with more masculine traits. But he was well aware that this was one of the exceptions to that particular rule. The brown was unusually red in color. And quite attractive, really...for a male dragon.
Fioreth, of course, only really admitted that greens and sapphires were attractive. He might acknowledge a copper, but he had a sense of scale and knew how likely it was that he would catch one of the larger females.

Binagoonganth flicked his wings agitatedly as a human voice came from above the pair, no matter how much he liked to socialise with other dragons the brown had always retained some of his nervousness about humans other than his bonded. The canine wriggled around upside down in an attempt to see who was coming while he was still getting his belly rubbed. Zamora reached up one hand to silently reassure her dragon and used the other to keep the dog from falling on his head, not that he wasn’t already dozy enough but she doubted a knock on the head would help.
‘He is but don’t tell Bina that will you?’ Zamora replied, flashing a grin up at the firerider. ‘He’s already asking if we can keep it and I feel sure an animal this friendly has already been claimed.’ She didn’t know much of M’kar and Fioreth except by reputation, the pair were from a much earlier hatching, already being close to graduating before Zamora had even Impressed. They were very easy to recognise however, if Fioreth wasn’t the most striking dragon around with his flame bright hide then he was certainly a contender.
Are you certain? The brown dragon looked wistfully at the excited animal again. I really like him. Zamora rolled her eyes. ‘Yes Bina, I’m sure. Are you sure you haven’t switched bodies with Igadoth or something? This is normally his kind of thing.’ Looking back at M’kar Zamora hastened to explain. ‘Normally it’s my brother’s silver dragon who likes to try and adopt every animal he comes across, for such a massive dragon Igadoth certainly loves small animals, and children too.’

M'kar laughed, unhooking his straps and sliding down from his small dragon's shoulders. He touched down lightly. "Well, it's also a vermin canine. Cute, yes, but it probably has fleas."
Of course, that might not put Bina off. Dragons did not, after all, get fleas. There was nowhere for the small vermin to hide on the smooth skin of a dragon or firelizard. "And you're the silverrider's brother, then?"
M'kar did not know Z'mir particularly well. He seemed a decent enough guy from a distance. Of course, he was a rankler and Fioreth flew with the greens...not much contact there.

Zamora wriggled uncomfortably and gave M’kar a hard look. ‘Did you really have to mention fleas?’ she asked as an itch which she just knew was purely in her mind crawled up her back. She never could stand a mention of fleas. The canine however was definitely unbothered by such things as he bounded cheerfully out of Zamora’s lap and approached M’kar with pricked ears and madly wagging tail now that the firerider was on the ground. I don’t think he has fleas, you weren’t itchy until you thought of them. Binagoonganth grumbled. I know that Bina, and you still can’t keep him.
Zamora sniffed, slightly miffed by the wording of that question, she couldn’t tell though whether that had simply been a slip of the tongue on M’kar’s part or if he really did think her to be Z’mir’s brother. ‘Z’mir’s my brother, I’m Zamora.’ She answered both possible parts of the question in an oblique manner. ‘To be honest I’m quite surprised he hasn’t tracked you down and started grilling you about your dragon yet. Z’mir’s a beastcrafter as well as Igadoth’s rider, and he’s absolutely fascinated by al these new colours of dragon, wher, and firelizard that keep turning up. At least Igadoth and Thesa know how to keep him in his place.’ Zamora chattered on a little while she watched the terrier try and attract some attention from the firerider.

M'kar dropped to one knee and reached out to scritch the canine behind the ears. "He has to belong to somebody...and somebody who's never even *thought* about kicking him, I'd reckon. Cute fellow. Who do you look to, eh?"
Not that the terrier could tell him...unlike dragonkin, dogs truly were mute beasts. But he was absolutely cute... "I can see why your dragon wants to keep him. Utterly adorable. And he needs to be sent back to his owner. I wonder who he could possibly belong to."
Most people at Allride had a flit or two, so canine pets were relatively unusual.

Zamora laughed softly. ‘I don’t really think he’s going to answer you M’kar.’ She said. ‘I don’t doubt that you’re right though, I can’t imagine him going unclaimed.’ The dog seemed to know that all the talking was about him, and did his best to prick his ears while he was half falling over at having his ears rubbed.
‘Now on that score I have no clue. I’d swear I’d have noticed him before, but I didn’t’ Zamora shrugged. ‘So, in review I have no idea of who to return him to. I expect he’ll be missed eventually, and neither of out dragons seem inclined to eat him or stand on him, he’s safe enough with us for now.’ Maybe he came from the hold with a visitor or something, there were so many firelizards at the Weyr they tended to outnumber even the humans, most weyrfolk probably wouldn’t have time to look after a canine.

M'kar considered. "Well, likely he's owned by one of the lower cavern workers and shouldn't really be out here. If he spends most of his time indoors, we might not have seen him before. He's quite a bit older than a pup, after all."
Fioreth peered at the terrier again. Eat it? It wouldn't be worth it and would probably be tough anyway...the fire would much rather have a nice, fat wherry.
And any tunnelsnake that messed with the terrier would likely, well, lose. Badly.
