Name: Keshia
Age: 16
Gender: female
Sexual Orientation: homosexual
Rank: blueweyrling
Physical Appearance: a delicate heart shaped face is given a childlike caste by large dark eyes perpetually widened with surprise, shock, or fear. Under those eyes, and a nose that will never make a remarkable facial feature, is a wide thin mouth that is almost always set in a serious line.
Her figure is tall and copper skinned with a woman’s curves, though she could never be called voluptuous, and a natural grace that comes with having reached her full growth. Her blue black hair falls to her mid back and is normally tied out of the way of her work.
Clothing was never Keshia’s vanity and as long as it fits she will wear it, most of her clothing is hard wearing cloth in brown, black, or dull green shades.
Personality: Keshia is really one of natures active people, she would rather do something physical than something intellectual so it isn’t easy to see why she wasn’t content with a life of what her father considered ‘women’s work’, she doesn’t have patience for quiet work that requires close attention. As a result of this Keshia doubts her own abilities often due to the sometimes poor quality of examples of her work. There is no harsher judge of Keshia’s work than Keshia.
Keshia isn’t really a social person, in fact she’s painfully shy when she first meets people and isn’t really demonstrative about her thoughts and feeling even with people she considers friends. It is certain that had circumstances not prevailed against it Keshia would have lived her whole life in her restrictive home hold.
Due to the bias nature of her upbringing, that is her family constantly asserting that dragonriders were ‘lewd and amoral’, Keshia often looks sideways at people as if trying to see whether they’re about to rip each other’s clothes off.
History: Keshia was born in a small and very strict hold in the north. She was the oldest child of her father’s second wife and in effect the oldest child in the family since the youngest of her half siblings was seven years older than her.
Keshia was put in charge of her younger siblings as soon as she was considered responsible enough to watch them while they worked on simple tasks. What even the children did was separated by gender, girls did ‘women’s work’ such as carding and spinning wool, sewing and cooking while boys were expected to learn to tend to the holds animals, and start hunting and tracking as soon as they could.
Also in her hold, although dragons and their riders were condemned at every opportunity, firelizards were much prized. Although they had no queen lizards a sufficient number of green clutches were laid in sensible places, that is places where they could be found before the green forgot all about them, that all but the very youngest children were offered firelizard eggs, though girls, not being considered as useful as male children were usually given eggs that were small or known to be sired by blues. Keshia and some of her sisters were offered eggs from just such a clutch by one of their half brothers when Keshia was thirteen and the egg Keshia chose hatched an adorable but scatterbrained blue she chose to call Shay.
As Keshia grew up she grew restless, the simple life and the simple work she was allowed to do never quite satisfied her, although it seemed her mother and sisters, and the other women around her were all quite content. Since she the oldest of the children who still lived at home Keshia was sometimes sent to carry messages to other small holds in the area.
It was at one of these other holds that Keshia met another young girl about her age called Alya, now these two young sheltered girls fell in love, or at least in lust but from their point of view it was love, but really had no idea what they’d gotten themselves into. Their experience of relationships in their homes was that when a girl reached the mature age of sixteen, which they were both approaching, her father would pick out a husband for her, possibly taking advice from her mother. It was also know to the two that sometimes if a girl expressed a liking for a particular suitor to her mother then that would be mentioned to her father.
With this hope firmly on her mind as her fifteenth turn approached Keshia timidly approached her mother on the topic of marriage. At first her mother was quietly happy that her daughter had a sweetheart, as a pairing between two youngsters who at least liked each other was favoured. However this quickly turned to horror and disgust when she learned her daughter’s favoured suitor was female!
Her father was informed as fast as human speed and volume would allow and Keshia quickly found herself head and shoulders deep in some kind of trouble although she wasn’t exactly sure what she’d done wrong, why in the world would her mother object so strongly to Alya?
Keshia’s father was not a cruel man by nature but he was strict, when he was told about Alya he decided to set an example to his other children about improper behaviour. Overnight Keshia’s family started acting as if she was dead, or had never existed, no work or food was set aside for her, and anything she said or did was studiously ignored by all but the youngest children.
Upset and confused by this sudden change in behaviour Keshia hung around the hold for a while, taking food from the kitchen and working anyway. When a neighbour with a son about her age stopped by and asked after Keshia on his son’s behalf her father’s answer: ‘I have no daughter called Keshia’ shocked Keshia into taking some action. Deciding that she couldn’t possibly get into any worse trouble, she stole food, clothing, a small amount of marks, and one of the oldest runnerbeasts and left.
At first she had no real idea where she was going, only a desire to leave. Eventually she spent her small store of marks, plus the pittance she got for selling her runner, to get passage on a traders ship not caring where it was heading. As it happened the ship was dropping people and supplies to the new Weyr on the western continent. On her arrival Keshia took work at the weyr and even stood as a candidate for Malaracyth’s clutch though she didn’t Impress.
During the hatching of Malaracyth’s second clutch Keshia was more lucky, Impressing the fourth, or maybe fifth since two eggs hatched at pretty much the same time, dragon to hatch, blue Fantasmath.
Family: mother, father, five older half siblings and six younger siblings all pretending she doesn’t exist.
Pets:
Species: firelizard
name: Shay
colour: blue
age: 3 turns
Appearance: A smaller than average blue firelizard with a rather long, but not extortionately so, tail. His hide is royal blue shade devoid of any flaw so great as to be called a marking.
Personality: To put it bluntly Shay is not very bright, most greens of his species can think rings around this silly blue and in the wild he surely would not have survived much beyond his hatching. He is willing and eager to please but his memory and attention span are very low indeed, any message carried by Shay is more likely to be delivered to a dolphin pod in the middle of the ocean than its intended recipient and this kind of failure upsets Shay a lot, once he can be made to understand that he’s done it wrong that is.
Dragon:
Name: Fantasmath
Colour: blue
Age < 1 turn
Appearance: Fantasmath seems to exemplify average appearance for a young blue dragon, he is mid sized, well in proportion, and coloured a smooth, even royal blue that lightens just a bit on his muzzle, tail tip, and wing membranes. Interestingly he is almost the same shade as Keshia’s firelizard.
Personality: Fantasmath is very serious and down to earth, he despises gossip and rumour and does his best not to participate in their spread, nor to give them much consideration. Anything said by Fantasmath is likely to be the bare facts. Speaking of the facts Fantasmath adores knowledge and being read to, because of the short memory of dragonkind though he doesn’t remember much of what Keshia reads to him so every song, story, and factual account is new to him unless he has heard it a great deal.
