The black queen had clutched! That was, of course, a good thing for those in the candidate barracks. An entire bunch of eggs, including what at least looked like a queen.
Marakar, of course, did not care about the queen, or the bronzes, but the lesser colors he knew a man of his preferences would Impress. "Good sized clutch," he said as he wandered back into the barracks. He was talking to Flirt, his green firelizard, who was perched on his shoulder.
Of course, there was a good chance others would hear, and he didn't care. He would, in fact, welcome it. Some human company was always nice.

She had only been in the new Weyr for a day and already something amazing had happened. Linara had dreamed of something wonderful like this, something that she'd wanted for a very long time back when she lived with her parents at Renegade Hold. The black dragon, one of the other Queens of the Weyr, had laid a magnificent clutch on the Hatching Sands. What was even more exciting to the young woman was the fact that there was already rumored to be a Queen Egg on the sands, too!
Linara had thought about going into the Sands and taking a peek for herself, but thought that doing that would probably make the queen upset. If she saw just a mere Candidate instead of some high and mighty Rider, she might get upset. Or! If she had decided that she didn't want any Candidates roaming around near her just clutched Eggs, she might become angry, too. Normally, Linara wouldn't have even cared, but she didn't want to be kicked off the list of those Candidates who were going to be Standing and which Candidates were not.
Instead, the plump girl was wandering around the area of the Candidate Barracks, looking for someone to talk to and, oh yes, they would talk to her! She hadn't met any other Candidates and was looking for some friends. Well, she didn't really want any real friends, she just wanted people who would do things for her if she asked them. But that was okay, because sometimes that was all she ever wanted from people. But she was a little lonely. Maybe making some friends would be good for her.
Somewhere in front of her she heard the sound of a voice, a male voice, and got excited. Even though she must have been at least a dragonslength behind whoever it was, she heard the echo of their voice, and understood what they were talking about in the lonely hall. This guy was remarking on the fact that the Clutch was of a good size. Had he seen it? Hurrying up, she caught up with him.
"Hey, you," She said and drew herself up so her chest stuck out a little bit and she seemed a little bigger and taller than what she was. Usually when she tried to meet someone, she tried to impress them so that either they would be intimidated or like her. This time, she was hoping that this person would like her.
"I heard that you were talking about the Clutch. Have you seen it for yourself? I just got here and I already heard about it."

Marakar shook his head. "I haven't seen it, but I talked to a brownrider who caught a glimpse. He said he saw a nice pile of eggs and a queen."
He turned to smile at the girl, not really intimidated, but then, he was a large young man. "Are you one of the girls who will be daydreaming about the gold or one who will be hiding from it?"
He tapped the chair next to him as he sat down, a silent invitation to join him. She was, he thought, dressed too well...rich parents who hadn't sent her off with work clothes that could get dragon oil all over them without any kind of a worry. Well, she'd learn.
And right now, he would have discussed the eggs with a wherry. While he might not show too many outward signs of excitement, especially after being left Standing once, he *was* excited. If he was pushed, really hard, he might even admit it. Although he did wonder what Renth would clutch, still. And whether that queen egg contained a gold or another black. Not that another black would be a bad thing...they were still queens, after all.
Just as long as none of the dragonets got Renth's temperament...

Well it was a good thing that this new guy didn't seem scared of her! Then she wouldn't to pretend to be extra nice to make him like her! He seemed as eager to talk to her as she was to talk to him. Even better! Now she wouldn't have to even be too nice at all. All she had to do was hold his attention as long as she could and hope he would be her friend.
"A brownrider? Wow, you know one already? How long have you been here?" She asked, sounding too incredulous to actually be really interested in what he had to say.
But really she did thing that was kind of interesting because she didn't know any riders except for the one who had taken her from her old home at Renegade Hold. He was really nice and funny and sweet and it was just too bad that he was too much older than she was. Then again he was only a bluerider, too! She hadn't admitted it to anyone but she really wanted to ride a Queen dragon, or something, anything, better than just a green. Her dad had always told her that the best dragonriders were the ones who rode black or gold dragons and he had never seemed to think much of blue or greenriders. Maybe that was why she was so set on being a queenrider, but she would take any dragon she got! Secretly, too, she thought there was something graceful in the way green dragons flew, but she wanted to keep her options open!
This guy seemed like a nice enough young man. Maybe he would Impress a bronze or brown or one of those new colors that she didn't know too much about, but they were really pretty! She hoped that he would get what he really wanted, even if it wasn't the color he thought he would get!
"I am kind of hoping that I will be good for the queen dragon that is in the queen egg if you say there is one," She said, thinking about it. Yeah, she really did want to Impress the queen dragonet, but she wouldn't say no to something else. ""But I know that only one girl will get it and I'm not silly enough to get all excited about it and only to get too disapointed when she chooses someone else."
But in her mind, she was thinking that only she was good enough for the little queen even if she said otherwise. That dragonet deserved the best and so did Linara!
"What about you? Isn't the Clutch big? What do you want to Impress?" She was about to ask him more questions then thought about how rude she was being. "Oh, I'm Linara of Renegade Hold. What are you called?"

Lithe walked in to the candidate's barracks and saw Marakar and a girl he did not know talking. Sky who was on his shoulder quickly took of and flew over to Marakar other shoulder and chirped flirtously at the younger green Flirt. Lithe walked and said " Hello Marakar." He had blush on his face that was quite noticable. He pulled him self a chair up next to the to and said " You guys have problery heard about the eggs. So have ethier of you seen what they look like? Is the a queen?" He stopped his nevrous rambling so he would not sound like a fool.

OOC: Guest, just a note, Renth is the only black dragon ever hatched and she's fairly young.
Marakar settled back into his chair. "It was only J'tor, and I definitely don't know him well." J'tor preferred women, he'd already found that out, so no matter how cute he was.
"And good luck with that, Linara. It might be a black, though. I'm Marakar. And this..." The green on his shoulder preened and chirped back at Sky. "...is Flirt. And yes, that's her name."
There would be girls from all over hoping for the contents of that queen egg, Marakar mused. At least this one seemed reasonably pleasant. "Yes, there's a queen, Lithe, at least, there's a large yellowish egg Renth's taking a lot of care over. I wouldn't be surprised if it's another black."
With one hand, he reached up to scritch Flirt. "And, I'm hoping for a green. I'm not..." He paused, she was holdbred, and put it delicately. "...really 'qualified' for a bronze."
There, that would reveal it without really saying it. If Lithe's blush had not already done so...

ooc: Oh, okay. i thought there were more. I should have looked at more of thecharacters. I am sorry. Ic: Well, even if it was 'only J'tor' it was still a brownrider! She had heard that brownriders were so handsome and cute, with their big browns behind them. To her, they were just as good as bronzeriders! At least a brownrider probably wouldn't leave her for a man, which would be so embarrassing, especially after a flight. "J'tor is still something, I think, at least compared to us! And plus he's a brownrider, he must be sooo nice," She sighed, thinking about the handsome, burly image she had of all brownriders. "I think that it would be nice to have another black dragon on Pern. It would help balance out the golds, even though golds are so beautiful." She leaned over to gaze at the green flit, funnily named Flirt. "She's a cute one and it's nice to meet you Marakar. And you, too Lithe." Although she wasn't sure that she approved of this guy just randomly appearing and sitting with them, she knew she had to be pleasant and polite to him, though. Yes, it wouldn't be good to make enemies out of people she just met. Then Marakar said he would prefer a green to a bronze. But why? A blue or brown or something like that would end up catching the green and blue and brownriders were usually guys, too. Did that make him? Her cheeks suddenly became rosey at what he was suggesting. "Well...well...well, greens are wonderful dragons and I bet you would make an excellent greenrider," She said, pushing away what her mother and father had always taught her about 'people like that'. So what if he prefered other guys. Dragons didn't care and so nether should she!

Marakar nodded. "They are. They're the most numerous for a reason...they don't have much stamina, so you need a lot of them so you can switch them out for fresh beasts when they're tired, but..."
"I'd say nothing beats a green for fancy flying, but the white and rainbows are smaller. Looks like rainbows only Impress girls, though. Maybe. It's hard to tell...but they're two for two on picking females. So, you could get one of those, or a green. Or a sapphire...a female blue, or copper...female brown. There's one female bluerider, although I suspect..that female blueriders are likely to be gay."
From her blush, she definitely wasn't that.

Lithe nodded and said " Yes that his ture. Though of course the blacks still have to listin to the queens. Though it would be good to have more just so long as the next one does not turn out like the first." He shudder at the thought of having two dragons like that around. Though there next comments made the small blush that was already on Lithe's face even worse. It was pretty obvious what he was thinking about it. Then again maybe it wasn't. Though in reponse to what Linara said he said " Of crouse he will make a good greenrider he's to cute....." He quickly stop talking to not revel to much. Though he knew that it was already to late for that.

"Oh, I did not realize that there were so many interesting dragon colors here. Things are so different here from where I grew up before my family moved to Renegade Hold," She said, remembering from when she was young that she'd only seen a green, a brown, and a bronze before. There hadn't been any such thing like ebonies or...rainbows...or female browns. Things were so different, but so nice here. "I remember that girls who wanted to be dragonriders really didn't have much choice. They were either greenriders or the lucky ones were gold. IT is good that girls can now do just as much fighting as the boys."
And that was true. If a girl wanted to fight hard against thread, then why shouldn't she? Though she did not want to do a whole lot of Thread fighting herself. She knew all the ballad and songs where dragonriders died during threadfall, or their dragons died. It was sad and she didn't want that to happen to her.
"Well, I think that the golds should be the ones who are listened to because it was a gold dragon that Clutched a black one, right? Maybe if there is a new one, her personality will be more influenced by her rider in a good way," Linara said thoughtfully. She looked at Lithe, who she saw was blushing again and she caught what he said about Marakar being cute...But she didn't know what to say to that and instead pretended like she hadn't heard.
"What do you want to Impress, Lithe? Me and Marakar already said, so now you tell!"

Marakar frowned. "From what I hear, Maylina and Renth...well. Like dragon, like rider."
Yeah, the black's rider was a pregnant dog. Not that he knew that much from experience, as he had been avoiding her. He'd seen enough in brief glimpses to know that was warranted.
"I'd bet Lithe wants a blue...and then it to fly my green," he teased, knowing full well that if they weren't candidates, Lithe would jump into bed with him in a second. Besides, it was only fair revenge for the 'cute' comment.
Linara? Maybe she'd make a good black rider, if there was one. Or a good...hrm. Copper or sapphire seemed more likely to him than green. Or... "I know what you might Impress, Linara. You might Impress rainbow."
She reminded him, oddly, of the self-possessed yet uncertain Tirlynna.

At Marakar's comment Lithe's blushing got even worse though he did have a small smile on his face. He was beat red at the moment. He just responded to Linara's question " Blue or brown. To fly Marakar's green." He knew that Marakar was right and he wanted that color of dragon just so that it would be small egough to fly Marakar's green. He let his embressment subside for a moment before he said " Linara you do seem like the type to impress a rainbow." Though Lithe was not to good at guessing what kind of dragon people where going to get.

Now that was a really interesting though, Linara considered. A rainbow. She hadn't really thought of a rainbow because she was too focused on the gold egg laying on the Sands. But she really didn't know too much about them except that they were a mix of all the colors and, if they really had too, could clutch if they needed, though it was rare. Because she didn't know about them, she didn't know why they would think that she would be good for one.
"why do you guys say a rainbow? I think it would be nice, but I guess maybe I'm too focused on the queen to have learned much about the other newer colors," She said, shrugging and not caring if they thought that she was being arrogant about the queen egg or not.
Linara thought that Marakar and Lithe were cute together. She had never seen boys tease each other like that and even when a boy was pursuing a girl, he probably would tease her like that in public. It was both new and strange to her, but she wasn't becoming freaked out like she had been when she just discovered how they both were. It was a little funny now and she was glad that if she did manage to Impress a queen dragon, she wouldn't have to worry about them taking her to bed because they would be focused on each other. Neither of them were, well, masculine enough for Linara, sadly, although Marakar was cute in a boyish sort of way.
"I think that you would be a really good blue rider, Lithe. A brown probably would be just as good for you, too, if you aren't scared of maybe chasing my future dragon," She said, grinning. Now it was her turn to tease him even though she wasn't at all interested in him.

Marakar hrmed. "Because you remind me of Tirlynna...I met her a couple of times. She Impressed the first rainbow. They're...well. Very small. Smaller than greens. But they kind of seem to think they're the real queens, you know. There's only two, and both Impressed women...who knows if that's an absolute, though."
A male rainbow rider? He didn't know. They had that...something...about them. Reinth did, anyway. Automatath was still a hatchling.
"And Lithe? You are completely shameless. You know that, right?"
Maybe Lithe would end up the greenrider, he was the worse flirt of the two, and greens did tend to flirt. Could Marakar see himself with a blue?
Maybe.
