It was weird to be free. It was weird to have some time alone, to not have anyone looking over their shoulder, making sure they were working, making sure their work was good. It was weird that he didn't have anyone to answer to anyone but a couple of people. I was weird to have everyone smile at him and nod at him and not judge him. It was weird that he was treated like a equal, not like some dog who could only obey his masters.
Narinkeez, for the first time in his life, could call himself free. He could say that his master was no man but himself. Sure he had to obey the Weyrleaders, the Candidate Master, and those who were in charge of him, but they didn't threaten him with beatings, they didn't really force him to do their will. All they did was suggest with kind smiles, though they expected nothing but his loyalty. And he was willing to give it because he had never been treated so well, never been given new pairs of clothing, or fresh linens for his bed, or provided a meal for him three times a day. Narinkeez was happy, healthy, and he felt loved by everyone around him.
"What a beautiful day."

Levra sighed. Zoeth, feeling her sadness gently rubbed Levra with her head. For some reason the day had reminded her of her lost family. It was just about then when she hear "What a beautiful day." She wanted to blow up. Somehow, she managed not to. No day was ever beautiful anymore. Well, her brother was like that, with his annoying happiness. He was always going after her to cheer up. Only Zoeth understood her. Her sweet Zoeth. With a tiny nod toward the new boy she said, "Hello."

The young man's expression was almost bursting with happiness. He looked like he had just conquered the world, Impressed a dragon, inherited a fortune. None of these were true, but that didn't stop him from thinking his one random day was the best day in his entire life. Narinkeez heard the greeting and turned to face the woman, then was taken aback, his grin fading slightly by the fully grown green dragon she was with. Still, he was too happy to be discouraged and he grinned again, looking like he could have hugged her. In his happiness, he didn't even notice that she looked very sad.
"Good day to you, greenrider and green dragon. It's a pleasure to see the both of you," He said, bowing low to both of them in respect for their rank over him. It wasn't until he straightened up that he saw she had a very sad look on her face. For a moment, he was puzzled and couldn't understand why.
"Isn't it nice? To feel free air in your lungs. To eat free meals. To do whatever it is you wish and not have to worry about being hit?"
