Jahzara huffed and set down her burden of a straw bale for a moment. It was a blessing and a curse that Jahzask had made her nest in this smaller cave and not in the renovated stable-cavern that Jahzara and Jerria had been working on for the whole turn and a bit they’d been in the west. A blessing because the wher wasn’t frightening the livestock protecting her eggs, and curse because Jahzask insisted her nest needed fresh straw every single day, which Jahzara had to carry down there every evening.
‘You’d better appreciate this Jahzask. ‘Zara muttered as she picked up the bale again. ‘And you’d better not use it all at once.’ Jahzask replied that she did appreciate it, she was happy that her eggs were so well cared for, and she was impatient for darkness to fall, which was practically a speech compared to the communication that the gold and her handler had previous to her Run.
Jahzara lugged the bale to Jahzask’s nesting cave and dropped it just inside the entrance, Jahzask set to work kicking out yesterday’s straw and indicated she wished her handler’s help. Storm flew in and out dizzyingly fast, chattering at Jahzara and Jahzask cheerfully and grabbing clumps of straw with his talons. He was helping!

Teonie was not sure she should approach. At the very entrance to the cavern she stood, trying to owrk out f there was a way she could see the eggs without bothering the queen.
if she bothered the queen, then the queen would not let her Stand for the clutch. She'd heard many wher queens decided who got which egg, so she had to get on Jahzask's...and by extension her handler's good side.
She was about to slip away when something small and blue almost hit her. "Hey!"
Oh, great. She was thoroughly busted now. Sharding *flits*.

Storm veered around an unexpected human and promptly forgot what he was about, discarding his old task in preference of trying to get the girl to play with him. Jahzara and Jahzask, both drawn away from their nest tending by the surprised exclamation from without, stuck their heads around the cavern entrance in rather comical unison.
‘Storm, leave that girl alone.’ Jahzara called her flitter, who had been orbiting the girl’s head in the hope of her playing, to order then turned her attention the girl. ‘And what brings you here? Business?’ She inquired, not really recognising the youngster but she could have a message, or something…
Jahzask snorted impatiently, silly youngHers, the babies were what brought this young human out here no doubt. She pushed past Jahzara and approached the girl, examining her through nearly closed eyes and running her senses delicately over the girls mind. Jahzara arranged herself against the rock face, bemused by Jahzask’s behaviour.

Teonie looked embarrassed, then tensed a tiny bit as the gold came towards her. Sure, whers were a lot smaller than dragons, but the gold still seemed pretty sizable.
"No. I probably shouldn't be here. I was hoping...for a glimpse of the eggs. I can leave." Not that she wanted to, and she wasn't exactly afraid of the gold.
Just a little intimidated. The firelizard, she was trying to ignore. Silly critter...of course, blue firelizards weren't exactly the smartest things on Pern.
She should not have come here, but...

Jahzara shrugged on shoulder in a sort of non commitical gestre of agreement, taking in various things about the girl. She seemed embarrassed, either at being startled by Storm or at being caught (both perhaps?). Jahzask made the girl nervous but she wasn’t running in terror at being approached by the queen wher, Jahzara approved but… ‘You’ll have to ask Jahzask then.’ Jahzara commented, leaving the decision entirely in the hands of the gold.
Jahzask uttered a soft series of chirps as she strolled around Teonie, sniffing and prodding at the girl, she was well enough but if she wanted to see the clutch she would have to be properly examined. YoungHers had left the decision to her Jahzask, smart YoungHers… Jahzask stopped her circling facing Teonie and looked expectantly at the girl. Was there something she wanted to ask by any chance?

Teonie regarded the gold for a moment. Such a gorgeous color the wher was.
"Jahzask, I would very much like to look at your eggs. I promise not to touch them or anything without permission."
She wasn't sure exactly how one addressed a queen wher, but the handler had said to talk to the wher directly. They were, supposedly, more independent than dragons. Less reliant on their partners, more likely to make their own decisions.
That was part of why she wanted one.

Jahzask considered Teonie regally through her mostly closed lids for a long moment. Not scared of a big wher like Jahzask was she? That was good but Jahzask was old and bonded, how would this one deal with hatchling babies who might do anything in their first moments? Well she was the only one Apart from YoungHers who had even come to see Jahzask’s clutch, and she was respectful. Jahzask stretched out to prod the girl in the shoulder with her muzzle. She could come and see the eggs, but no trying to take them, she wanted to keep these ones until they hatched. With her consent given Jahzask hurried back into her nesting cave.
‘You can look but no trying to take the eggs away.’ Jahzara translated the gold’s thoughts into words just in case the girl hadn’t understood. ‘Oh I’m Jahzara, in case you want to know. You’ve come at the right time, I’ve just brought up some fresh straw so most of the eggs are going to be visible while we change it.’ Jahzara was happy to talk about Jahzask’s eggs. ‘I was hoping a few more people would come down. I did ask around but no one seems to want whers when all and sundry can stand for dragons.’ This time there was a twist of bitterness in the lean wherhandler’s voice.

Teonie snorted. "Dragons. Oh, sure, they're pretty."
She'd made her choice. The girl stepped into the cavern, moving so she could see the eggs, but not getting close to them. "How many are there?"
She'd started to count in her mind, but... Wher queen eggs, she reminded herself, were not obvious. But then, she didn't want a queen.
"Dragons are all very well if you're obsessed with flying and stuff." And these poor whers were likely to get candidates who had stood for dragons multiple times with no success. The dregs.
