Lesson two
Lesoroth. Please collect you rider and report to the training grounds.[/color] Fortuth called the single hatchling politely. It was odd to have to call only one weyrling to a lesson.
D’tini fussed and fiddled with several weyrling harnesses he thought might fit the rainbow dragon. ?He wasn’t entirely certain how to address a class when the class consited of one student, but Lesoroth couldn’t be held back to join the younger weyrlings and the only way the pair would make it into the senior class was if K’rian studied all day and all of the night so there really wasn’t any other solution.

K'rian and Lesoroth had both been asleep when Fortuth's call filled the rainbow's mind. He stretched and yawned, somewhat being used to the early morning calls. He stood up and shook himself before going over to K'rian's bed and nudging at the soundly sleeping weyrling. Wake up. We have a lesson to go to. Now get up.[/i]
K'rian opened his eyes slowly, then blinked rapidly a few times before rubbing his eyes to remove the sleep grit. "Ok. I am awake. I am up." He said a little grouchily, not really liking having to get up so early. He rolled out of bed then hastily found some clean clothes. Soon enough the pair were headed towards where Lesoroth had sensed the call had come from.
When they arrived K'rian was surprised to see that several harnesses had been laid out. "Morning sir. Perhaps it is a bit obvious, but what is on the agenda for todays lesson?" He enquired a little puzzled, he didn't think harnesses were fitted until the third or fourth month, not the second.

‘Good morning K’rian.’ The blue rider replied, though he was looking at Lesoroth, it was still quite amazing how fast those little dragons grew, D’tini had heard that the ebony and silver had grown as fast but they had been close to mature when he first arrived at the Weyr so he couldn’t exactly judge.
‘Well, as you’ve probably guessed, the first order of business is getting Lesoroth to try on these harnesses. Hopefully one of them will fit him, they do adjust quite a bit so you shouldn’t need to keep changing it once you’ve got one that fits.’ D’tini took a second look at Lesoroth and decided to try the biggest set of straps he’d brought down. ‘Lesoroth should be wearing this anytime he’s not eating, sleeping, or being bathed, to get him used to moving with it on. If he learns to fly mostly wearing a harness he’ll never go through that phase some other weyrlings go through of thinking it’s going to interfere with their flying.’ D’tini continued, passing K’rian the harness he’d picked out. ‘He grown so much that I think this will fit him.’

Both K'rian and Lesoroth listened intently to the weyrling master, Lesoroth with a little excitement, K'rian feeling a little dubious. This will be fun, don't you think Mine? K'rian looked down at his rainbow dragonet. "I'm not sure Les, possibly." He replied in a low tone, not wanting the weyrling master to take offence. He carefully took the harness and looked at it with a frown. There were so many straps and buckles, he wasn't sure what went where? "um sir. How does it go on?" He asked, his cheeks staining a light pink, sure he'd seen plenty of dragons wearing harnesses, but he'd never seen one being put on. I don't mind if he puts it on me, just to show you. K'rian continued to study the harness, trying to figure it out himself. "Perhaps he might show us on his dragon..." He pauses long enough to look at D'tini. "If he doesn't mind."

D’tini sighed and rolled his eyes at himself, he could be quite remarkably stupid at times. This was one of them. It had totally slipped his mind the K’rian wouldn’t actually have a clue how to put the piece of equipment he’d been given on his dragon. Evidently K‘rian and Lesorth were still engaged in a conversation about the straps while D’tini was thinking about what an idiot he was. The result was a pretty good idea.
‘Sorry, I’m new to this whole teaching business.’ D;tini apologised, finally getting hold of himself. ‘I guess it’s going to be a learning curve for me too.’ He picked up Fortuth’s harness, compared to that the weyrling harnesses looked tiny.
‘Right.’ D’tini said more to himself than anyone else as Fortuth came to stand in front of him without being prompted. ‘Okay, it is more simple than it looks. Find the strap with no buckles attached, that goes between your dragon’s forelegs, the shorter straps are the chest straps, do the two ends up to the side of the neck, it should rest between the ridges, just in front of where you’d sit. That leaves you with the longer end to go around his middle. The buckle for this one goes to the side as well. Make sure it’s resting well above the wing joints, otherwise it’ll rub every time Lesorth moves his wings.’ D’tini moved around his dragon, pulling straps around and doing up buckles as he spoke. ‘That’s it for you since there’s no safety straps for you on this harness, there are loops for some but we’ll get into that when Lesoroth is ready to fly, By then you’ll have made enough harnesses that you’ll be sick of the sight of them.’ D’tini wound down with a slight smile. ‘If it turns out too big there’s some smaller sets here.’ He added as an afterthought, he didn’t want the little dragon chafed raw by badly fitting leathers.

K'rian watched D'tini's demonstration carefully, not wanting to get it wrong. Then he studied the harness again, quickly finding the buckle free chest strap, then easily figuring which were the neck and middle straps. After having seen the weyrling master doing it, and managing to figure out what each strap was, he thought it would be a piece of cake. He sorted the harness so that the neck straps were in his hands and fumblingly got them buckled round Lesoroth's neck. Then he stood back a moment before passing the middle and chest strap through Lesoroth's legs, a slight smile appearing at knowing he'd got it right. He went on to pull the middle straps up either side before buckling them together, well out of the way of the wings.
Lesoroth snaked his head round and sniffed at the harness, even though he was in the harness, he could feel it was slightly loose. Needs to be a little tighter. K'rian nodded at Lesoroth, himself able to see it was a bit loose, but unsure how to tighten it. "Um, how do I adjust it to make it a better fit?" He asked, his voice holding a note of puzzlement.

D’tini leaned against Fortuth’s foreleg as the boy moved around his dragon, buckling and tugging at straps, and if he didn’t move all that fast, and he fumbled at the buckles, well it was the first time he’d done it, and at least if was on correctly.
‘Now that I can’t show you on Fortuth. All his stuff is made to measure now that he’s done growing.’ D’tini pushed himself away from his dragon and approached the rainbow. ‘This, and the other bits like it are the important ones for adjusting the fit. You’ll probably be using them a lot.’ The bluerider flicked a metal piece absently and pulled gently at various straps, trying to find what needed adjusting. Pretty much all of it. ‘It’s quite simple in theory and often quite fiddly in practice. The safety catch had to be flicked up before you can do anything. Then it’s a case of feeding the strap through this bit to double it up. Pull the strap along a bit so the pare leather isn’t all bunched up.’ D’tini’s hands moved in quick practiced motions as he spoke, pulling Lesoroth’s harness tighter. ‘When you’re done snap the catch down again, and give it all a good pull around to make sure it won’t come undone again.’ He continued doing so before stepping back. ‘How’s that?’ it was unclear whether he was asking K’rian’s opinion on the procedure, or Lesoroth’s on the fit.

K'rian watched D'tini adjusting the straps with a bit of awe, somehow understanding what the weyrling master was doing even without seeing it properly. Lesoroth stood still during the process, accepting the other rider adjusting the straps without even a hint of nastiness or nervousness. The rainbow dragonet snaked his head round to look at his rider, Do you understand? I think I do Les. "Thank you. I think I can remember how to do that." K'rian replied, the same time as Lesoroth said, It feels very secure, much better.
