F'mar stood in the lesson room of the candidate barracks, waiting for the candidates to arrive. He had sent them messages earlier in the day letting them know where and when to meet. He had a lecture prepared about what to do during the Hatching, and after that, he had some interesting activities planned. He smiled, excited about having the chance to teach the candidates. They were the future of the Weyr, and even though he complained about the work, it was a great opportunity to work with them.

Bamre walked into the lesson room having gotten the message to be here he had decided to leave Iron elsewhere so he would not distract him. When he entered he saw F'mar standing in the room so crossed the room and stood in front of the bronze rider and said "Hello F'mar."

Tirlynna stepped into the room and came to something close to attention to the bronze rider. She didn't say anything just yet, as if a feline had stolen her tongue, but just kind of nodded to him.
Jator wandered in a moment later, staying to the back of the group. He wanted to hear, but to attract the candidate master's attention? No thanks.

Andicher poked his head through the doorway, observing those who had already come in. He recognized the girl, she had tasks with him. Tirlynna, had the others called her? He wasn't sure. The one boy had impressed the gold flit, he recognized him as well. The last boy, though, he had no connection to. Deciding it was fine to enter, he stepped inside and greeted the other candidates with nods and smiles, coming to stand to F'mar's side with his back against the wall. Bind was in a small sling around his neck. He didn't think she'd cause any trouble; at a few days old, she didn't do much besides sleep and eat.

Eldan walked down the hall and into the lesson room with visible suppressed excitement. He didn't care if these were the same lessons he'd had at the weyr community, he might Impress and that made all the difference between boring and exciting. The young man sat down and looked up at the bronze rider. These lessons, even if they were the same, would be far easier to pay attention to.

Getrara and Zaren walked in to class at the same time. They had been talking to each other and they didn't get to talk often, so it was a time for them to catch up. The two twin's flits were nowhere to be seen, since they were off eating.
Levra led Darket toward the class, always being the overprotective sister. Darket didn't mind as he chattered with Levra and cuddled his new blue flit, Pounce. Levra's Verde sat on her shoulder looking out like a queen.

Melir and Maylina...arrived.
***
F'mar watched as all of the candidates filed in. He nodded at Bamre, pleased that the candidate had actually greeted him. That young man definitely had potential. He waited as the candidates took their seats around him, and then he cleared their throat to get their attention before beginning his lecture.
"All right, as you probably know, the Hatching is probably going to happen in a few days. Today, I want to tell you a little bit about what will happen on that day.
It will be very obvious when the Hatching begins. Malacyrth will probably bugle and announce the Hatching to everyone, and all of the dragons and fire-lizards will start to hum. As soon as you hear that, you are to get ready and put on your candidate robe. I will go through the barracks to make sure that everyone is ready to go, and then we'll gather at the entrance to the Hatching Grounds. I lead you in, and then you form a semi-circle around the eggs, girls on one side, boys on the other.
Everything will start pretty fast. Some eggs may even be hatched by the time you get there. Do not under any circumstances touch the eggs or try to help an egg to hatch. If an egg can't hatch, it means that he dragon is too weak to live, and helping it into the world will only mean that you watch it die on the sands."
He paused, knowing how difficult that was to hear, and he let the candidate mull it over for a few seconds before continuing.
"The dragons will be very hungry and confused, and they will be making some very loud, even unpleasant noises. They are very clumsy when they first hatch, and if you see a dragon stumbling towards you, it doesn't always mean it's going to impress you. Unless you hear a voice in your head, get out of the way if you don't want to be run over.
DO NOT, under any circumstances, touch a hatchling that isn't Impressed to you! Never try to force-impress a dragon. If I see you trying anything like that, you will be removed from the sands immediately. You have no idea what dragon is right for you, it's the dragon's choice. Even if you're worried about impressing a certain color, if that Impression does happen, all of your concerns will melt away because that dragon will be perfect for you."
If he looked at certain female candidates as he said that, it was entirely by accident, really!
"If you are lucky enough to Impress, you will experience the greatest thing imaginable. There's no way to describe Impression, so I won't bother."
He smiled, thinking fondly of his own Impression to Antagyth, and then blushed and kept going before he got too emotional.
"After you Impress, you will go off to a section at the back of the sands, where there will be food for your dragon. Any questions?"

Eldan flinched when he heard that if a dragon was too weak to break its own shell, the Candidates should let the dragonet die rather than help it. This did not sit well with Eldan. His moral code included giving every dragonet a chance at life. Shamrock eyes blazed with suppressed anger. That may have been the way of things, but it wasn't fair.
"So, if an egg is showing every sign of life except the dragonet can't get out, we are just to let it die? His eyes met F'mar's without blinking and his voice held a dangerous edge. To Eldan, the very idea held undertones of murder.
"What if that was your dragon, suffocating, dying, all because some fool of a Candidatemaster said to let a dragon die rather than help it out of the egg? Can you live with a dragon's death on your conscience? I know I can't and won't; if a dragon calls to me to help it Hatch, I will, by Faranth, and shards on the rules!"

Bamre agreed he knew he would do the same for his dragon if came down to it, but he hoped it would not come to that because he did not know if he could do it in front of all those people just breaking a rule like that. He really hoped it would not come to that. He had to say something though to not let Eldan sound like he was the only one. He said " I agree you can't just kill it for that reason that just is not fair. You don't kill human babies because they are weak. Why should the baby dragons be any different. Are saying they are lower then us?" His voice had a defiant tone to it and one of questioning.

Getrara stared at the candidate master, shocked and then said, "If anything, I could help a weak dragon survive, I am sure i know enough technique to know the right stuff to help a weak Dragon." Getrara would never sentence a being to death and to her it was cruel to do this.
Zaren felt that it was best to do as the candidate master said to, for he probably new best.

Andicher greeted F'mar's instructions with shallow nods. He wouldn't argue, even though he wasn't quite sure that it was moral to leave a hatchling in their egg. When Eldan jumped at the bronze rider, and Bamre and Getrara in close pursuit, the young man crumpled his frame slightly and slid down along the wall a few inches. Though he'd never admit it, he admired the three beyond words that moment, for standing so publicly against authority. He wouldn't, couldn't have done it.

Zenniel had arrived earlier... possibly in the middle of the rest of the group, but she hadn't wanted to show her ... here-ness. She had sat down near the back, or rather leaned against the wall so she could see the candidatemaster. She already knew this, but she had only learned this because of her friend, L'nand. Yes, Zenniel had a friend. This is where you'd probably gasp. Okay, not really.
She put a hand up to her mouth in shock when she heard that you should leave a hatchling in its shell to die. Zenniel wouldn't do that! She would run forward and help that dear live! Its struggle for life was surely worth more than its death! It would live, and she would make sure of it! There was no such thing as a weak dragon! What about the whites? Wasn't there a boy who Impressed to the first White because he helped the white?
Then the master continued talking. About Impression. Zenniel didn't feel like saying much here, or even doing much. Everyone had told her the same thing. Dragonriders, even L'nand had told her that the feeling was indescribable. Zenniel listened more.

Jator hoped that the weak dragon thing would not come up. He hoped every egg would hatch a healthy dragon. For now, he listened, making mental notes about how to act on the Sands.
Tirlynna, who had already been briefed by C'lyn nodded a little bit, listening. She knew the candidate master was right. There was nothing worse than being left dragonless...it was much better the dragon died in the egg than after Hatching and Impressing.

F'mar sighed as several candidates protested the instructions to leave a weak dragon in its egg. He had expected that. There were always a few who were upset by that.
"What I was trying to explain is that you're not letting it die by leaving it in the egg. Look, a Hatching is a natural process, and you should not interfere with nature." He turned to Gertrara. "Now, if a dragon that hatches on its own is sick or injured, you can feel free to help it."
"A good general rule is that is the Queen doesn't seem concerned, you shouldn't worry either."
He nodded, clearly ending the subject there.
"Now, we're going to play a little game. I need a volunteer!"

Bamre knew though it did not matter what the F'mar said he still would save a drgon if it needed him. Yet he was curious at what the game could possibly be he wondered. He quickly stepped froward and said " I volunteer." He was worried though abit standing in front of all the others. He looked around a little nervously.
