Name: Z’mir (formerly Zamir)
Age: 19
Gender: male
Sexual Orientation: undecided, he hasn’t put a great deal of thought into this area
Rank: Silverrider/journeyman beast crafter
Physical Appearance: Tall, dark, and not particularly handsome. Zamir stands at 6’3’’, towering over his mother and sisters, and even topping his father by several inches. He’s quite muscular from a lifetime of outdoor work without being overdeveloped. Zamir has pale skin that burns within a half hour if he’s out in the sun without some kind of protection and doesn’t really tan.
Zamir’s face is long and unfortunately the most outstanding features he has are his long nose and deep set eyes that give him a shifty, dangerous look. His mouth is thin lipped and has a natural downward turn that tends to make him look bitter. All in all Zamir’s face isn’t much to look at and he knows it. To detract from the impact of his face Zamir wears his hair at shoulder length, letting black curls fall everywhere, there’s no way anyone could mistake him for a girl.
Zamir’s clothes tend to be hardwearing, and frequently hard worn, they’re nearly all plain work garments in charcoal black, earth brown, or dismal grey.
Personality: Zamir comes across as standoffish or hostile, he’s suspicious of everyone, amazingly cynical, and shy enough that he’ll hardly every open a conversation with a stranger, though if someone starts a conversation with him he’ll converse, even when his hands are shaking with nerves.
He has no patience for word games, veiled insults, hyperbole, or double entendres. If Zamir has something to say he’ll just say it and expects other people to do him the same courtesy, anyone messing him around is quite likely to be told to go away. He also has no patience for fools, in fact it sometimes seems that Zamir’s more social with beasts than humans.
Curiosity is Zamir’s besetting sin. He loves to know all the whys and wherefores of everything and is determined to find them all. This is the one place where Z’mir’s natural standoffishness tends to evaporate, if he sees someone with an oddly coloured dragon or firelizard, or a breed of canine he’s never seen before, or a new way of training runners Z’mir is there, patiently waiting for that person’s attention so he can question them and make notes.
Relationships are not where Zamir excels, he’s too nervous to make a move on anyone he likes and panics when anyone approaches him.
History: The second child of some ordinary southern holdfolk, Zamir didn’t have a very interesting childhood. He played in the crèche with other children while his parents worked, took the lessons required of him without complaint. He was always a quiet child, kept down by a bossy older sister and a younger sister who did nothing but complain from the moment she was old enough to talk.
Zamir always liked animals, from developing incurable attachments to herding canines as a little boy, to beating up other kids for frightening runners and teasing the watch wher. You could guarantee Zamir would be near the centre of anything involving animals, along with his younger sister and sometime crony Zamora. It’s fair to say he naturally drifted in an apprenticeship in beastcraft.
His first master had a hard time keeping up with Zamir, the boy seemed to absorb knowledge like a sponge and had an unending attention span when it came to working with animals, the old man soon passed him on to younger, more energetic masters. Zamir made a bit of a tour of the southern holds, though not all of them, on his apprenticeship. His favourite stops were the mining hold where he went to learn what he could about whers and a hold where the lord kept big cats to hunt with, Zamir does tend to be attracted to dangerous things.
During his apprenticeship Zamir heard a bit about a new Weyr forming in the western continent. He had his craft to concentrate on so he forgot all about it until word of odd dragons was whispered around. He decided that he’d like to go, aside from anything else there was bound to be new animals to study and tame out there in the untamed wilds. However he needed to complete his apprenticeship before he was free to do anything of the sort, so he kept his mouth shut, easy for him.
A few months before he reached 18 Zamir finally got his journeyman’s knots, and right away announced that he was heading west on him journeying, an action that met with no more than a raised brow from his masters, making him quite suspicious for a while. To his surprise, and despite his objections Zamora announced that she was coming along when Zamir told her. He tried hard to change her mind but Zamora was totally determined, and Zamir didn’t really fancy finding her swimming next to his ship or something the day he left.
A naturally quiet person Zamir settled more or less quietly into life at the Weyr, finding it not all that different from hold life in many respects. There wa a new set of lessons, and of course fascinating dragons, firelizards, and even a few whers for him to study when he wasn’t working, but there were still chores, and although he had a whole new continent and it’s beasts at his disposal Zamir was still expected to do some work and send it back to his masters.
On the day Malaracyth’s long awaited hatching arrived Zamir was, typically for his luck, working in the furthest area of the Weyr from the candidate barracks and hatching ground. After a mad sprint around the Weyr Z’mir arrived just in time to see his little sister Impress (and argue about it) brown Binagoonganth, which at least made Zamir fell justified in bringing her along with him (not that he’d really had a choice). Not long after that Zamir himself Impressed silver Igadoth, making him Z’mir, bonded of Pern’s second silver dragon.
As amazing as Igadoth evidently was Z’mir soon came to think that Impressing him was a dubious honour since the silver hatchling spent most of his first month sleeping, eating, and outgrowing his hide at an even faster rate than any of the other hatchlings, meaning that most of Z’mir’s time was spent applying vast amounts of oil to a dragon who seemed to be doubling in size every time he turned around.
By the time Z’mir got used to his new routine, and Igadoth stopped growing quite so fast, there were other things to worry about as it turned out the Weyr had a killer in their midst. First a bronze weyrlingrider was poisoned, then a while later one of the junior queenriders was killed as her dragon Rose. That proved beyond a doubt that the first poisoning was not just one of the great many people Pep’so insulted over the course of his life getting some payback.
Although many new measures were taken to ensure people’s safety, and the culprit was searched for in every corner in shadow it all came to nothing. One night something drove a previously silent and deadly assassin to a mad rampage in which more than a dozen riders, weyrlings, and wherhandlers were killed, including the Weyrwoman.
After the traitorous dragonrider fled the Weyr not much ever seemed to be achieved, everyone had their own ideas on what to do but the Weyr seemed to broken up over the deaths and betrayal. With no clear leadership things continued in a gloomy state of flux until the young gold Kellerth Rose and was caught by bronze Antagyth, making their riders, Lysita and F’mar, the new weyrleaders. At last things were looking up again, slightly.
Shortly after the rather strange and somewhat disturbing experience of Igadoth participating in his first chase Z’mir went along to a firelizard hatching, dragging his sister along with him. Z’mir had always been curious about new kinds of animal, and since the clutch of ten was from an aqua he felt he just had to be there. As it turned out it was a good thing he was since Z’mir Impressed his own aqua there, although this firelizard, which he chose to call Thesa, was not amiable to being studied.
Family:
Zamelle, mother
Lirmorn, father
Zalora, sister (21)
Zamora, sister (16)
Pets:
Name: Thesa
Species: firelizard
Colour: aqua
Appearance: Despite her pale blue hide its very obvious that this is no blue, even if her size, which is equal to a large brown or small bronze firelizard, didn’t give it away her shape certainly would. Unlike most firelizards, but like other aquas and like bloods, Thesa has webbed toes, which together with her lean body and long tail make her a very fast swimmer indeed.
Thesa’s bright, light hide makes her a very noticeable firelizard indeed, her bright blue shade is fairly even all over her body, only picking up a more turquoise shade as it runs along her tail.
Personality: Be not fooled by her colouration, in her mind this aqua is as much a queen as any gold, and it’s not likely that she’ll get close enough to a gold firelizard to be corrected since she seems to avoid both golds and other aquas as much as she possibly can. When she is forced to meet another queen this female will stand on her dignity, perching on her bonded’s shoulder stiffly upright and noble, more like a statue of a firelizard than a pet.
Around humans and lesser firelizards Thesa is personable enough, willing to gossip and play, provided it’s clear that she is in charge, not anyone else. Yes this little female has a huge amount of pride, and when it’s hurt she’ll likely go off and sulk for a few hours, and pointedly ignore whichever insubordinate man or beast annoyed her for as long as she can recall her upset, normally a few hours to a full day. Her bonded is hers and hers alone, all should remember this, especially him because Thesa can pitch quite a spectacular fit if he pays attention to any other firelizard before her, or if any other firelizard should dare to land on him without her leave. Training this girl out of her tantrums is going to take patience but it can be achieved.
Dragon:
Name: Igadoth
Colour: Silver
Appearance: Igadoth shines a muted metallic silver, highlighted along his back and wings with brighter rings of colour that reflect almost white in strong light. His colour however, is hardly the most notable thing about him, not when compared with the simple fact that he is one of the largest dragons around standing comfortably taller than queens and bronzes both, and significantly longer as well. It’s clear from his deep chest, his huge wings, and his serpentine long body that Igadoth is built for speed, and though he might not be as nimble as a green in the air his agility is equal with a small bronze and with practice could get better.
Personality: Igadoth always projects an air of calm self assurance, if he’s doing something he knows exactly what it is, why he’s doing it, and how it’s going to be achieved. This is very much clear in his manner, his voice, and his posture. If Igadoth ever suffered a moment of uncertainty, it wasn’t because he failed to think things through.
Igadoth is always interested in what other dragons are up to, and loves nothing more than to spend his day sunbathing and gossiping about things. He’s also prone to sticking his oar in and trying to help whether the intended benefactor wants Igadoth’s help or not, although he can’t imagine for one moment why anyone would deny the help they clearly need.
For such a huge dragon Igadoth has a positve obsession with small things. He just adores canines, felines, firelizards, human children, and even whers. Considering Z’mir’s curiosity about all animals this may be a good thing, but from the point of view of those parents who see their child cuddled up to a muzzle that could swallow them whole it’s probably a bit unnerving.
