Defiance Weyr
From the Destruction of Our Weyr
We Rise Again
To Destroy Our Oppressors
Thread is a myth and a lie.
Or so the members of the High Council would have the people of Pern believe.. It has been a thousand Turns since the last strand of the devastatingly simple yet dangerous Thread was seen on Pern, and weyrs have become obsolete.. Holders moved into the empty weyrs, taking over the spaces left by dragons; these new mixtures of hold and weyr became known as weyrholds. A remnant of dragons and riders remained, stubbornly continuing to exist despite the fact that their primary mission had been completed. They found new occupations, and many find it hard to believe that dragons weren’t always used as transportation and running messages, among other things.
Power became concentrated over time until a single ruling faction rose to guide the people of Pern: the High Council. A faction made up of high level riders, crafters and holds, these are the people who gained control over Pern. Eventually they began to rule over Pern with an oligarchic iron grip. The gold riders grew to be particularly influential with the other members, and it is an accepted belief among them that Thread is never coming back. That idea became entrenched in the minds of the many, making the fear of Thread into a farce.
In more recent Turns, the number of golds in Pern had dwindled to a mere six. The two youngest gold riders refused to join their elders on the Council, Hailee out of a need for independence and Kelyna because of her deep-seated belief that Thread would return. Kelyna and two bronze riders C'lyn of Kylith and F'mar of Antagyth decided that they would break with the High Council and establish a traditional Weyr. They fled the main continent and created a Weyr on the Western Continent, where they remained for eight Turns.
Displeased with the rebellion, the High Council attempted negotiations with the “upstarts,” who had decided to call themselves Allride Weyr, to promote the idea that everyone who wished would be given the chance to Stand at least once. Allride flourished and grew with a clutching queen to lead it, and three years ago, the first clutch was laid. The High Council’s disgust grew exponentially when mutations were born of the clutch and became prominent at the young Weyr. It was agreed in secret that they would do whatever they could to exterminate this threat to the integrity of their governing force, seeing how Allride might “corrupt” other dragonriders into following them.
While Allride grew and taught itself to fight the imminent Threadfall that they believed in, the High Council groomed a bronze dragon rider to fight for them. First he was sent as a spy and then an assassin into their ranks; his quick hands made short work of Kelyna, killing the Weyrwoman and throwing the Weyr into a panic. However, the Weyr did not cease to exist, and the young gold rider Lysita became Weyrwoman. The High Council decided that the threat had to end, and therefore allotted their dragon rider a wing to himself, composed of riders utterly loyal to the High Council and the purity of the dragon bloodlines.
The High Council Wing was sent to destroy Allride, taking mercenaries with them, and it did its job well. Only 1/4th of the weyrfolk and dragonriders survived, escaping to a tropical island in the West. They have only been there two months, and recently they have been joined by the other young gold rider, Hailee, and her retinue, including her hot-headed, disagreeable bronze rider. Tensions are rising between the remaining Allride riders and weyrfolk and the weyrfolk and riders of Hailee’s weyrhold. The future is uncertain at newly named Defiance Weyr, and all is at stake as the time for Threadfall approaches.
