Marakar felt that the candidate barracks were far too empty. Why had he not been chosen?

He sat in the common room, trying to distract himself by mending one of his work tunics...who cared if the stitches were uneven? He only planned n wearing it for rough chores anyway.

All of those dragons. Andol had Impressed. Aphrodie had got that really pretty copper. Amerna was the new rainbow rider.

He was...nothing and nobody. "Stupid," he told himself.

There was no sense to feeling like that. He wasn't the only one to have been left Standing. And if the ebony dragon clutched, it might not be for long. Yet, he could not help but feel like an unworthy failure. "Stupid candidate."

Lithe walked into the commen room. Sky sat on his shoulders while Tree sat on his head. He was looking around everywere. He was thinking about the sky. He was thinking about his stuffed dog he held in his arms. He though about the grass. Though he was so lost in thought that accdenit bumped into Marakar. Though instead of saying "excuse me." He just sorta stood there for five mintues staring at him and said " That. Was is that you are sewing?"

Marakar glanced up. From a chair nearby, Flirt chittered brightly at the bigger firelizards.

"Just mending. You know, occupies the hands, doesn't tire out the mind." He didn't think he knew this boy.

Flirt, of course, had her whirling, faceted eyes mostly on Sky. Oooh! Handsome blooooooo. Never mind that she wasn't old enough to fly yet, she'd apparently hatched old enough to -look-.

Lithe walked over and found a chair next to Marakar to sit in. He sat down and looked at him for a moemnt. Then his eye's began to wonder has he began to think and he siad " The blue sky looks pretty." He then countied to think some more and then looked at Marakar and said " My name is Lithe." Though he acted like he was talking to Sky. The blue then turned and looked at Flirt. He could tell when he was beening looked at. He then chirped at the young green.

Marakar shook his head. "Man, this one's gonna fly early and often," he predicted.

"I'm Marakar, and the troublemaker is Flirt."

Flirt, of course, gave her human a distinctly indignant look. Then, she went back to chirping at the blue and spreading her wings. And even preening.

Lithe smiled and siad " Yes it seems like that." Lithe looked at Sky who flew over and landed right beside the flirtous green and chirped at her. He was enjoying all the attention and the flirting. He even chirped flirtously back to her. She may have been to young. Though that did not mean that Sky was not going to perpare for the future. Lithe smiled at Maraker and said " Hello Maraker." Lithe had to admit the other was cute. Though he decided that now was not the time to say anything. He then looked up at the ceiling and siad " The ceiling is pretty."

Marakar glanced up. "I think our firelizards are prettier," he noted. "WHat do you call yours?"

At least he had Flirt. That made him feel a little better about being left without a dragon, although only a little. Firelizards were pets, not partners, even the smarter golds and bronzes...and maybe the aquas, although he had no direct experience with anything 'better' than a green.

Lithe looked at him couriously. This was a new one on him. Normally people looked at him strangly when he said somthing like that. It normally ended conversations. Even when he did not mean it to. He looked Marakar couriously for a moment. This one had just basiclly countied one without noticing. Lithe smiled becuase he found that attractive. Though he was going to wait till the right time to say anything about it. He then pulled himself out of his thoughts and siad " Well the blue there is Sky. The green one is Tree." Sky was still sitting beside flirt and he was chirping at her flirtously.

Which, of course, Flirt was giving back as good as she got. "She's lining them up for when she's all grown up, I think," Marakar quipped with a laugh.

Typical. He'd got the stereotypical green firelizard. Maybe he'd get the stereotypical green dragon. Or maybe he was an unImpressable.

No, no, no. Don't think that from losing out at one, single, solitary Hatching.

Lithe looked at the pair who was chirping at each other and luaghed. " Yep it seems like Sky is diffently intersted." Lithe though it was funny becuase it had been awhile sinice he had seen Sky acting like that. He was happy he had come here. People seemed to be much nicer to him dispite his strangness. His eyes began to wonder as he was thinking. He aslo pulled out a piece of paper and began to draw though he kept it covered where Marakar could not see. Tree helped by getting bettewen Marakar and the drawing.

Marakar didn't try to peek, figuring the candidate was one of those who didn't like people seeing his unfinished doodles.

"He'll have to wait at least a turn." The hatchling actually gave Marakar a look. "Well, he will, for all that you wish otherwise, Flirt, he's totally robbing the Sands."

He paused, then found another question, "How old is Sky?"

Lithe just luaghed at Marakar's question and siad " He is 4 turns old." Lithe looked at Sky. What Marakar said was diffenlty ture. Lithe fisnished up his drawing and folded it up and slid it acourse the table until it was sitting in fornt of Marakar. On it was a heart with the words that said ' Remember and save this for later' Lithe understood perfectly well the whole thing about not getting in a realoship while a candidate. That was why he siad save this for later. He wanted to let the other know so that he could think about it for later.

Marakar blushed, then teased, "Be careful giving those out. You might pick a straight guy next time."

There were, after all, still more straights than gays and bis around the Weyr. It was a good thing greens picked women too, although there seemed to be slightly fewer greens than there had been. As if the sapphires and coppers were taking over, a little.

Lithe giggled alittle and siad " Don't worry I have a good idea of who is and who isn't." Lithe did his best to try and make sure he did not create a akward sitution. Though he was gald he had gotten the reaction that he did. He even blushed some himself.

Marakar grinned. "As long as that stays functional. But I'm not getting involved with anyone while I'm still a candidate. I might even Impress at the next Hatching, if I'm...luckier than this time."

So many hatchlings, why had none of them so much as glanced at him?
