"Yes we are *that* short on candidates. I will tell you that it has only been done to two Journeyman crafters so far and that they are okay with it. What you might want to tell F'mar is just to give the option, not to force anyone," Kelyna said, not wanting to get C'lyn too mad at F'mar.

C'lyn nodded. "I agree with giving the option, unless the person is known to be dragon deaf. I just don't want to come over as a total tyrant here."

Kelyna laughed and answered, "I don't think we will be considered tyrants unless we force everybody under an iron hand, and with you here, I don't think that will happen. You are very good at making sure this weyr stays fair."

C'lyn nodded. "What we need is to get more riders over here. Especially the blues and greens." It was old wisdom. A Weyr could never have too many of the useful little greens.
Fortunately, the gold egg was attracting female candidates, some of whom would undoubtedly Impress green. "I'd be happier if we had more boys to put on the Sands, too."

"Yeah, I wish something would attract boys the way a gold egg attracts the girls. If only there was such a dragon, but I know, we should be happy that we have dragons at all. Most people don't understand why dragons are still around, but I believe it is because dragonriders have a greater purpose still to serve," Kelyna said. This was one of the reasons that she was convinced that thread would come back.

C'lyn nodded. "You'd think bronzes were chopped liver, and I'd have to assume there's one or two in the clutch...and I'm being sure to mention it."
He still thought the large black egg was a bronze.

"Bronzes are fine, but you can't tell a bronze the way you can a queen, and there are more bronzes than queens, which make bronzes less rare. I know a couple boys come for bronzes, but they don't flock in for the bronzes like girls do for the queens. You can see that just by looking at the candidates we have here," Kelyna said with a sigh, it was quite sad that they had more girls than guys. They really did need the guys.

C'lyn nodded. "Then maybe we need some kind of....incentive." He looked thoughtful. "Well, what we need is Search, but if the council catches us riding formal Search...even if we had the blueriders."

"The council is a huge problem," Kelyna agreed. Why was the council so strict on formal searches? If a place needed more candidates, it should be allowed the number of formal candidates that it needed. Then Malaracyth thought so that both could hear, Why not do informal searches? Why not have F'mar go from cothold to cothold asking for people that are old enough to be a candidate, if they want to go?

C'lyn considered. "We could do that. Would still be better if we could find a blue or green rider to go with him." That was, after all, one of the things the smaller dragons were best at.

Kelyna laughed and said, "But we don't really do much in the way of searches anymore. I guess it would be good to get something like that started again, though all dragons could normally tell someone that was good. I think F'mar and his dragon will do just fine."

C'lyn nodded. "Well..." He glanced at Kilith. "The other thing we could do is invite everyone to the Hatching to watch." He winked conspiratorily. "Make a big party out of it. The more people around, even if they aren't formal Candidates, the better."

"We would have to be careful about who we invite, we don't want word getting out that we might be more than just a cothold that has a queen that clutched. We might have to work hard to make sure that we were only inviting people that won't tell," Kelyna said, liking the idea. What did it matter if the dragons impressed to people in the stands.

C'lyn nodded. "Definitely. But some of those people may decide to stay. We've got land here that nobody's using, where cotholds can be set up. That's an attraction too."

"There definitely is an attraction in open land," Kelyna said with a smile. People always wanted to take up their own cothold. "And if they don't want a cothold, the could always become a member of the hold."
