Tirlynna had had time to get used to being a candidate. Now, though, it meant something.
Fifteen eggs on the Sands. And she had no worries about the weird eggs. In fact, she had dismissed it as the worries of a maiden queen. She hadn't done this before, she was bound to be weird and broody.
She knew C'tir hoped she would Impress the hatchling gold. She had not had the heart to tell him she would be happiest with a green. She was not ambitious, the way he was; did not seek responsibility.
She also had something else to look forward to. In a few months she would be an *aunt*, and she genuinely did look forward to that. Aunts were supposed to spoil children...if she had time.
She glanced around. "So...we should start a pool or something. How many bronzes?"
She bet the big black egg would hatch a bronze.

"I bet there will be three golds and three bronzes," Levra exclaimed. She had no doudts about what there would be. The baracks for candidates were kind of small, but they worked. At least they were bigger than the Community weyr hold's barracks. Verde sat proudly on her shoulder as she walked into the common room, her eyes daring anyone to say anything about her red hair or violet eyes. She had the look of someon you wouldn't mess with. She carried herself as someone who had seen death and didn't care about life anymore. When her brother stepped out of the boy's room, her eyes soffened, making herslf look a little mor vonerable.

Tirlynna hrmed. "My brother thinks that black egg might be a gold," she noted quite seriously. "I think it's a bronze." She glanced at Verde. "Nice firelizard. I may have to suck up to you to try and scrounge an egg at some point. Wouldn't mind one, and wouldn't mind it being a green or a blue."
She was not intimidated by Levra solely because she had no intention of messing with the other candidate.

Levra thought it was strange that this girl didn't seem to think her weird, like most poeple did. She just treated her normally. Levra decided to answer the girl since she hadn't been mean, "I agree with your brother. I think that black egg is a queen. Why would a bronze egg be bigger than the queen egg? I also think that egg that is bigger than the supposed queen egg is a queen. I then think that there are three bronzes. Oh, and this is Verde, my flit. I might give you an egg, when she has her flight." Then waving the boy over, she added, "This is my brother Darket."
Darket smiled slightly, a smile that seemed bright, but you could tell it had once been brighter and that cares that a boy should not have faced had been faced and matched, without touching the spirit but a little bit. Darket looked at the girl his siter was talking to and said, "Hello, I guess my siter has already introduced me.

"I'm Tirlynna," she introduced. They might know she was the weyrleader's sister, but she wasn't going to emphasize it. "And what matters is fifteen healthy dragons. Nobody's heard of three queens recently...but I'd buy two." She wasn't going to believe there could be more than that.
Darket got a flickered grin. She still figured she, herself, would Impress green.

"You ar the one that asked,"Levra snapped at Tirlynna. Looking at Tirlynna she said, "Your brother is the weyrleader isn't he? Don't you agree with his "thread theory". Wouldn't three golds just prove that?" Levra's temper had gotten the best of her. A look from her brother cooled her down, but she was still mad at the other girl for just throwing off her comment like it was nothing. Another look from her brother told her that she had better apoligize in some way. He was younger than her, but he had a much cooler head and often knew how to make a situation bette.
When Levra didn't say anything, Darket said, "And this is my siter Levra." He said it grandly, like someone announcing a famous person. With this, he gave Tirlynna a smile and shook his head, hoping to try to get her to not ask questions.

Tirlynna shook her head. "Yes, he is, but that doesn't mean anything," she said, defensively.
She was *not* going to let anyone treat her differently. Not that she missed the warning. "It certainly doesn't mean I hang on his every word with no mind of my own." Shards...

Knowing that Levra might get upset, Darket quickly stepped in and said, "Do you want to come with me to the kitchen. I was thinking of geting a snack." He did not want to be between a war with two girls. It was easier if he just made a situation less uncofertable. Knowing his sister though, she would fight until she was sure that this girl was fine, if the girl hadn't already started to hate his sister. He could tell his sister was glaring at Tirlynnna, so he grabbed Levra's arm and started pulling her toward the kitchen. Looking back at Tirlynna, he said, "You can come too if you like."

Tirlynna followed. She didn't hate Levra. She didn't really hate anyone.
She could, however, see herself clashing with the other girl way too much. She would have to try and work out how to avoid it. A new Weyr couldn't afford conflict even between candidates and weyrlings.

Levra silently stormed beside her brother. She knew that if Tirlynna didn't stop getting on her nerves that she would have to do something about it. It was strange though, most of the worst ones started off with something about her hair or eyes. Maybe Tirlynna wouldn't be so bad. maybe they could learn to get along, but if Tirlynna kept up on this track of hidden snubs...

Tirlynna headed into the kitchen. "So, if you could *choose*, what color dragon would you want?" she asked of the other two candidates.

Darket spoke before his sister, "I think I want bronze, brown, or blue, though green would be fine with me. I don't really care.
After that Levra quickly piped up with, "I would want gold, though I would take any color. I would rather a female dragon but if I got a male I guess that would be alright. Levra decided that this topic was probably fine. This girl probably could't find anything to snub at her with in this topic.

Tirlynna nodded. "I think I'd prefer a green myself. I don't think I'd be comfortable partnered with a male and golds are...beautiful, but a lot of the kind of responsibility I don't like." She flickered a grin at the other two.

Levra thought about this and without smiling replied, "I believe I would want gold because it is above others. I want something strong and powerful. I think I would do alright with responsibility.
Darket smiled and quickly piped up, "As long as I get something big, energetic, and not serious, then I am fine. I think blue or green would be too small for me."

Tirlynna smiled a bit at Levia. "A lot of work, though." To Darket. "Browns tend to be serious, though...bronzes are more energetic, but there aren't many bronzes."
Which was the other thing to consider. There was only one gold...
